I just found Amazonas Magazine in english at my LFS. This magazine used to be in German only but now it's available in the States in english. In my opinion it has a lot of the more useful details that people who are trying to breed fish are looking for. This issue has a lot of info on pleco breeding including an article about the elusive L25 (The one I want sooo bad).

and people around here had the exclusivity of it all, back in mid-2009 when I documented every single step of it on the topic "L25 - another breeding tale"...

and surfing from the L25 specie information, you can find the original article on Planet Catfish...

Too funny to think this story was translated from French (my native language) to English on Planet, sent in another approximative english version to Amazonas Germany, translated again in German by somebody much wiser than me, to finally be translated again from German to US English by someone from Amazonas US...

And, I have this magazine too... funny, isn't it ?

I'd like to add that in this edition, most of the L-numbers article were written by Swiss guys

I just want to say you are like a god to me. L25 is the fish I dream of owning/spawning. I have to say congratulations for your success with this species. Also thanks for providing the info to the world.

I'm currently 2nd year into growing L114 to breeder size just for practice. I figure if I can do it with this large species I will at least have some experience for if/when I'm lucky enough to get some L25

just to calm down : I lost my breeding pair in early 2010 after an attack of virus (or bacteria, I never got the final word of it all)... And with this loss, three 6 years old Panaque LDA63, three adult Scobinancistrus aureatus... in fact, every single "big" L-number which was in this tank had been lost !

I'm just a guy who had been lucky enough to have a L25 pair between 3 adults... who had a decent sized tank to raise them and an incident to start the spawning... nothing to do with "knowledge" or specific skills... And talking about the 2nd spawning (right before the 1st L-numbers days in Hannover), I lost every single fry when coming back, 5 days later...

I started a new challenge, with Panaque schaeferi & Panaque sp L191, in another tank... Let's hope I'll be wiser and even more lucky !

I think this highlights quite well, how you can "set yourself up for success". Breeding these kind of fish can't happen overnight, but the only way to get there is by always being well prepared. This means:

(1) Buying the fishes when they are actually available, and buy enough of them. You never know when they might vanish from the hobby, so this might mean buying a single one when you see one, on the off-chance that you will find more.

(2) Having appropriate accommodation ready for these kind of purchases, and for long-term upkeep.

(3) Having the patience to stick with them and not getting bored and sell them on because they aren't spawning. In this case it was only a year, but sometimes it takes much longer.

(4) Making your own luck by not taking unnecessary risks!

You make some very good points. I think the best one is having the determination and dedication. A lot of people roll their eyes when I say I have a ten year plan for my L114. I got mine as fry and when I say to people I'll be waiting for at least 5 years for them to be big enough to breed they think I'm crazy.

Well that and the fact I have a 240gallon, (2) 125's and 2 55's just for this one project.

I can relate to your experiences Joefish, my mates think i'm mad when I say i've probably got another 5yrs until my L14s are hopefully big enough to breed.

Plus I'm sure my girlfriend wishes I wanted human babies as much as I want Plec babies
