Looks like something closely related to Acanthicus or Pseudacanthicus.

Given the "beard", one may also consider Pseudancistrus or some such.

Don´t think so, Mats. Such a small beard can be seen in Acanthicus as well and the head shape doesn´t match with Pseudancistrus. Furthermore the odontodes on the body are much to developed.

I agree with Mats, it is a Pseuda. It looks a bit different because it was either already cooked or preserved. I have seen a preserved specimen of a cactus pleco and the overall look is the same.

I think you are agreeing with Daniel in that case... Not that I was saying "you're wrong", I just suggesting another genus it could be.

PseudaSmart, are you not confusing with ?

Both of you are correct. I looked at the BBC photo first, saw how familiar it looked and missed the fine print in the thread. I do know the difference between the two.

I have already proved the second meaning of my userid!

Hi,

This is a Pseudacanthicus from Corantijn River in Suriname collected during the 2010 CI RAP. We need to check more in depth for an ID. It could correspond to different species (P. serratus, P. fordii... or a new species). Unfortunately, Pseudacanthicus representatives are not so common in the wild, and it could take some time to obtain the comparative material.

Cheers
Raph.

Sounds like another trip to Suriname to me ... ;) Surely that can't be a bad thing.
