I am wondering why I need to log in with my password EVERY time I come on this forum ? My computer is never shut off, and I am the only one who uses it, so I am never logged off. Yet, every day the site asks me to log in. And yes, I do hit the keep me logged in box when I do log in. Thank you.

some sites use cookies that 'die' after some time, others have cookies that stay up and running until removed or logged out

PC uses a cookie that 'dies'.
although I have no idea what the expire time of said cookie is.
that's one for the backroom wizzards ;)

this is NOT a bug, but a safety method, it's aimed at safe browsing.

I know a fair number of forums that use the same way of keeping a certain safety level.
when you leave the computer for a few hours without touching the keyboard, you need to relog.

ofcourse, regardless of tinkering; no IT person ever found a cure for lazyness

clearing out the cache of your internetbrowser and hence relogging on forums, chatrooms and other social media, bankaccounts.......

is needed to protect yourself from malware, spyware and bots that harvest private data
if you rather perfer being lazy and as a result having your computer infested by a whole crowd of nasty bots; be my guest

but i prefer keeping it clean and safe and above all: private

if I have to relog only a few times a day because the Admin took the time and effort to make PC a safe forum, I can only applaud him for that!

sidguppy, thanx for the reply. My post was intended to be just a question, whereas your post, at least to me, seems to be a bit accusing. I do not consider myself lazy (well, maybe sometimes, I admit). I was just questioning why this was necessary, as in all the other forums I frequent, this is not the norm. I do not run a PC, therefore I do not have

I think what Sidguppy is talking about is correct (aside from the "you're lazy part", which if it was the situation that Sidguppy suggests would be rather lazy, as it happens every few weeks or so), but I don't think that's what is happening to you, vannillarum.

I'm not sure what is happening in your case, since I certainly don't see that particular problem. Maybe if you clear out all the cookies for Planet Catfish?

I get the same thing when I look at PC from my HP Touchpad but not from Windows based computers. Perhaps it is operating system or browser specific?

Ah, I missed the point that it's not being on a PC (and by "not a PC", I presume it's also not a Mac, Sun Workstation, Linux, etc; but rather that it is some sort of "pad" or "smartphone" type device)... This may indeed have a large effect - although I would have thought it shouldn't be different from other forums that require some sort of login information. It is however possible that something like browser compatibility or some "random" setting - such as "do not save cookies from this site" has been set on the machine. [Some (if not all) web-browsers have a cookie-saving setting "per site" as to how do deal with cookies, and it's usually something that it shows once, and remembers what was selected, and the choices are often "Save all cookies", "Only store cookies for this session" (and what is a session and what isn't is a bit of a mystery to me at least) or "do not store any cookies"]. This is supposed to prevent "malicious" cookies from being stored.

It's complex. There are things at network (IP), OS, browser, user control panel and serverside that affect it. Cookies, if enabled, aren't the issue, they store your username and some session stuff but not your password. Sessions are also a common issue but not the problem here. However...

If I look at the IP addresses you use to post, they vary widely, from 61.x.y.z to 79.x.y.z. The first two (e.g. 61.x) must remain constant to keep you logged in. This variance is triggering the forums security mechanisms, and logging you out. It must be something your ISP is doing which is causing this. I know it's not the case, but this looks like you're logging in from very different parts of the planet. Or, to put it another way, someone on the other side of the planet has gained access to your account. Sensible thing to do is to re-challenge for password authentication.

It is possible to lower this security level on the board but I am reluctant to reduce the security of the majority.

I'm good Jools, thanx. Strange about the IP address. I will have to talk to the Max I T people and see what is up with that. When (if) I get an answer, I will let you know. Thanx to everyone else who also had thoughts on this.
