Finally have the chance to post the total devastation that happened on 1/30/12. what cause this was the fact that my tanks were on a 15amp circuit. It tripped and I had not been home for 3 days. As soon as I walked in the house I could smell the foul water. First thought was that whatever happened I was pretty sure I had lost everything. With the massive loss of my prized plecos. Some that you don't come by or see often. Amazingly several fish survived. But this mishap really tested my desire to remain in the hobby. I seem to have got past the loss of the fish. But I definitely have not been able ti get past those plecos.

I have never seen a nicer group of Sultans

I believe I lost a total of 27 fish. I paid a big price to learn a lesson. I now have a much better understanding of electric use.

I guest I will have to update My Cats page. Also I don't think I will replace any of them. The way I feel now even though I am still in the hobby I am done.

What can I say. Just try not to let it get you down, and learn from the mistakes you made.

Maybe start up again small scale, with just a small breeding project in 15 gallon tank say. You could pick up a group of for a few bucks, and they could be fun to breed?

While not on the scale of your tradegy I feel your pain, having lost 6 Synodontis decora youngsters, 1 Steatocranus casuarius "dad" and 1 Synodontis nigrventris a week ago. RIP :(

Man, this sucks

I can understand you about to give up now.

a few years ago I had a similar experience when I got a nasty coctail of diseases in my showtank that within a month killed everything apart from the granulosus and a group of frontosa's.

when i had to bury my about to breed pair of Bathybates fasciatus that I had raised from tiny youngsters, I gave up on Tanganyika fishkeeping.
it was just too much.

this'll hurt like hell,
you got my support!

I once lost all fish in summer due to bad preparations for being away for 2 weeks.

It took until chrismas before I redecorated the tank - I just did not have the energy to do so.

I think I know what you are going through. It hurts

You have my sincere sympathy. Hang in there, the good feeling will return - although it may take a while.

Dreadful news here - some great fish. I'm so sorry for you

No matter how bad you feel, things will improve with time. We all make mistakes or have bad things happen once in a while - you only have to read through the forums to see this has happened to many talented, knowledgeable fishkeepers - the big thing is to come back stronger once you're through it.

Best wishs for the future

hi,
I am so sorry for your loss. I do know how you feel , as i recently lost everyone in my 54g tank, incl my favs, 2 L128's (5") which i raised from babies for 4 years. I know the heartbreak , from loosing just 2 plecs and various amazon dither fish, but you have lost so much more.

All I can say is we try to learn from our mistakes (mine was leaving cover open while feeding ,while phone rang, and my mother-in-law -has dementia-was visiting, sprayed her inhaler med into the tank, to see if there was mist coming out,she didnt do it to hurt the fish, she was focused on her med i guess, and the tank light was best for her to see) .

It has been about 3 weeks now, and i have just decided to re-cycle the tank and re-stock. I decided i love the hobby , hate looking at an empty tank, and know my husband and i will take much more precautions when she is visiting. I could not even talk about it for so long. The tanks are mine, not my husbands and he has no interest in fishkeeping, yet this gutted him too. He knows the work that goes into fishkeeping. He heped encouraged me to continue,he knows it keeps me focused after a tough day at work, and i find fishkeeping a "realease" on some level, but that is when all is going good, but members here are also encouraging, when we hear of a wipeout, first we have to ask ourselves how can we prevent this again, take some down time , then decide if we want to go again.

It's obvious you loved yur fish and couldnt forsee this..it is your decision to make , but I hope you get back into it.

take care,
Georgie

I became somewhat inured to wipe outs when I owned a fish shop and had a few shipments every winter come in with nearly everything dead.

In the past 8 years I have had two different disasters.
I lost two producing pairs of red turquoise discus and 12 adult L401 plecos six years ago.
About 4 years ago I lost 10 wild H. zebra plecos for reasons I still do not understand.

I just feel sorry for myself for awhile then pick up the pieces and continue my hobby.

Everyone who deals with living things inevitably experiences some disaster.
