I work at an aquarium shop and I am gauging interest on custom-built glass or acrylic pleco caves . They are customized to the size you want , and showmanship is a definate ! Seamed edges on the glass caves , which means it is not sharp to the touch and wont harm your fish , and acrylic caves will be routed off and soft as well . Caves will be dark glass or regular glass , acrylic will be standard , and the caves will be customized to the size you want . Gotta say, I love the idea. Not too long ago I tried clear glass caves for a couple of my hypancistrus species. The caves were actually larger glass test tubes, but I couldn't find any big enough, or anywhere where I did not have to buy a coupla hundred at a time. Can't wait to see pics.

And would you like removable backs , or glued on backs ? We will have all of those , but just gauging on what would be more preferred . Thanks guys

I had my friend(a glassblower) make me come clear caves with borosilicate 28mm heavy wall tube & my pleco did not use them at all.

Any interest? We can build pleco condos too, whatever you and your catfish want, we will build!

I thought about this idea in the past and concluded that one of the things that likely attracts the plecos to caves is the fact that they are dark. Further, most fish tend to react defensively to movement, they don't wait to ID the threat, they bolt when they see movement. So a clear cave might not be so great in this respect either. If I am correct about this, then my bet is clear caves might not be appealing to plecos. However, another idea in this respect did occur to me.

I have always liked to keep my plecos in bare bottom tanks. One reason is that by using frame only stands (like an iron stand or a 2x4 frame only stand)it allows me to look up from beneath the tank and see what is going on in all those places I can't normally see from the front or above. What has also occurred to me is that this should permit one to see into a cave from below if you do one of two things. Use caves without bottoms so the tank's bottom glass serves as the bottom of the cave or else have a cave with a glass bottom. This way light is mostly blocked but we could still look into the cave from below. I am not sure if a cave with no bottom would be structurally sound, so it may make sense to have glass bottom caves.

This would not give one a 360 dg view of the fish, but it would give a lot more view than we can normally get and I think is also more likely to result in the plecos feeling comfortable enough to claim and spawn in such caves.

Actually this is kinda of intrigueing. If you can be creative people. I see this as a thing to play with. Easy to see when fry are around and when fry are developing. Burying majority of the cave under substrate would make it dark as any other cave for those of us without barebottom tanks. And when you suspect fry simply pull it out and have a look and rebury if necessary. Now on a large scale operation may not seem feasible but heck be something to play with in a few tanks anyway.
