I have just bought a catfish and have forgotten the name of it. It is around 5 inches long, is grey and black and has a long tail with a long whispy bit coming off the end of the tail fin. Any ideas. Sorry but I haven't got a picture.

it's got a big fin on the top. I was told Royal something but I don't think it is a whiptail. I've looked at a picture of one and it doesn't look like it.

uh oh
I feel a tankbuster coming up....
You got yourself a "Royal Pleco" or "Royal Panaque", perhaps??

A baby Panaque

adult Panaque (or subadult, they get even bigger...)
Panaque nigrolineatus (and some very closely related species) get HUGE, as in almost Koi carp size......

Hi !
I really doubt it is a Panaque as these lacks the tail filaments he was talking about. It could be a Loricariini but again those are not grey coloured. I was thinking more at some Pims such as Merondototus tigrinus.
Could you give us more information regarding the body shape, whiskers, fins, tooth...
Cheers
Yann

I think it might be a common whiptail. Have you got a picture of one?

As Silurus suggested, the Cat-eLog is your best bet. There are many different whiptails out there, some of which are really tough to ID. I have 2 that were both sold as "common whiptail" but niether anre anything alike. Here are some pics of one of mine.
