Replacing filter intake head?

I have a ZooMed external canister filter, and I was wondering if there was some way to replace the "head" of the intake tube. Right now it's this slotted box that keeps big pieces of plants out; I want to replace it with a sponge. Does this make sense? Would it impair the flow too much? If not, does anyone have tips for doing this? Products to buy, DIY suggestions? I have an spare piece of filter foam from a HOB filter I got for a new tank, could I use that? Thanks!
(By the way, pretty sure it's this one: http://www.zoomed.com/db/products/Entry ... M1NiI7fQ==)

Hi all,

I have DIY sponges on all my intakes. I like the coarse PPI10 sponge because it doesn't clog. I just sew them up to any shape or size I want from a foam sheet (you can see the wavy seam).

You can also buy sponge blocks and cones in a range of sizes. Have a look at the "Huey Hung" or "Boyu biochemical" type. Have a look at this thread for another approach: <

Oh, sweet, thanks! I'll be looking for some extra filter foam next visit to the LFS; I think I accidentally tossed my spare piece with the trash.
