Great fish. But have to claify that a number of Wels Catfish have been caught in the UK exceeding this weight. Still a HUGE fish neverless! :-O

Funny that I probably have seen a good half dozen of such news reports from the UK over the last couple years but none from Spain, Hungary (where they have a lake stocked with wels for fishing tourism), post-soviet states - Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. It is always UK for me... ?

The BBC site is one of the most search engine friendly on the web and it has the advantage of being in English (so more widely read globally). I suspect that's got more to do with it than the state of local interest / journalism.
