Obviously the ideal Cory breeding tank should be a species tank, but I'm finding that as I breed and collect juvenile corys it sometimes takes a long time to get a mature breeding group to form. During this "growout" time I like to keep other types of fish with my Corys for variety, and to get experience with as many fish as I can. I have found that guppys, platys, and swordtails are OK, some tetras will work- some won't, and for the most part goodeids and small cichlids are a complete disaster, or are just too threatening! I'm keeping a few tanks with Corys and small groups of various Ancistrus right now, and while it works, I'm not seeing any breeding out of the Corys,(they did before) and the Corys seem much more timid as compared to when they are kept in a "Cory only" tank.

Ideally I'm looking for Cory companions that are small, peaceful and relatively easy to breed. What other types of fish do you keep with your Corys?

i keep corydoras with small characids (Nannostomus mortenthaleri,hyphessobrycon amapaensis),
hemiodopsis unimaculatus,
cichlid(dicrossus filamentosus) and dianema longibardi

Generally speaking anything that will leave them mostly alone should be fine.

Hatchets - if you can get / keep have never noticed bothering mine.
Ancistrus - live happily along side just be quick for the eggs as they will eat them.
Octicinclus - like live plant and only eat algae to my knowledge.
Mountai mino - Old favourite for kick starting filters but are happy enough in tropical tanks and peaceful.
Rumy nose - A tetra but very peaceful and happy.

If you want something a bit larger try a dwarf Gourami if you have the room.

Rasbora are supposed to be fully peaceful and shouldn't cause any issues.

You might want to stick to hardier fish as water quality in grow out tanks is not always ideal as filter in mine is pushed due to the number of high mess making little fellas in it.

Thank you for the replies! I forgot I have some of my Corys with Mountain minnows too - The A. spilotus even sucessfully breed with T. albonubes in the tank.

I picked up a few new ones to try this weekend - so far so good, but we'll have to see how it goes. I got some Hasemania nana- silvertip tetras - seem a bit boisterous, but so far no nipping. A.normani a top water blue-eyed killifish - looks like everyone leaves each other alone so far. Celestial pearl danios - galaxy rasboras - they seem too small to be much of a threat! And for a S. kronei growout tank (it's a big one) I got Xiphophorus Mayae, a giant 5 inch wild type swordtail. Should be interesting!

I have a 10gal tank about 50% filled with moss that has breeding groups of both C. hastatus and Galaxy Rasboras. Neither population is exploding, but both are slowly growing. I'm sure if each were in it's own species tank, or if the tank they were in was bigger, they'd do a lot better... or maybe, I just need to feed the fry or change water more often?
