Hi John. Welcome to the forum.
Try and post some pictures of your fish from above (good example
here), if you want a second opinion on their sex.
Have you searched the forum for "sexing hypancistrus", for example? There's tons of information on here.

1 & 2 appear to be males (Hair on 2 & Male vent on 1)
3 & 4, more likely, could be females, the pictures are out of focus.
Also, look on the L270 page there are photo's that will show you differences & what to look for. Males are hairy (fin ends and along their sides) and have odontodes and a sharper vent, while females have a round wider vent and are more curved along the sides, which is why I believe the last picture (fish #3) is most likely female.

In nature the hardness is very low where they are found, but
are adaptable creatures and will do okay in most types of water, avoiding extremes. If you want to breed them, you might have more luck going a bit softer, so perhaps a TDS of around 50-100 mg/l would be best.

Hi John,
To be fair I'm not 100% convinced your fish are big enough.
Either way, if you have males in a cave, put the temp up to 27-28
Then after a few days get a small power head and place it under the water so that the output is "blowing" directly over the mouth of the cave. Have it at least 1 foot from the cave.
Then the next day do a 40% water change.
You don't need to remove the wood etc.
All the best
Cheers
Geoff
