Rare run in with school of Flathead Catfish from 40 ft deep

It was a cold November morning for a river dive in Virginia, USA. Our team of four went out for one last dive before the end of the season. Most of us were hesitant in getting into the 56 degree waters. Although what we found 40 feet down was incredible! Generally we only see 1 or 2 flathead catfish while diving here but that day was different. We ended up stumbling upon a massive school of flathead catfish! Lucky we brought our video camera and caught it all on tape!

Awesome sight! It's like we all dove in with you and saw it. Thank you so much.

The catfish look to be all the same size. I wonder why they are together. Is it usual for them when young? Yearlings?

:-O How awesome are they?!? And most of them seem totally cool with the divers getting so close. Finding that school must have been a real blast.

I have two theories why would they congregate. One is spawning. However since it is close to winter, my other idea is hibernation, even if they look quite active.

Just wondering are flatheads native in that part of Virginia?

They are. Although of all the times we dive here, this is only time we saw so many grouped together like this. Generally only get a glimpse of one or two of these flat heads when we dive.

This video is absolutely stunning and engaging that you almost feel as though you are one with the divers. Schools of flathead catfish are not too rare during summer since that is when spawning happens since the water heats up to their most preferred temperature.
