Maintaining colors (or lack of them)?

I am very interested in getting
but I have noticed that some of them have a very nice dark black and bright white coloration (especially the young ones), but some specimens have a faded/grey appearance to their white area that is, in my opinion, a bit ugly. Is this caused by controllable factors like substrate color, or lighting, or is it just natural aging?

I've noticed this in some of the plecos i keep myself. The darker substrate seems to aid them in keeping a darker coloration. Lighter, well, makes them appear lighter! Also the lighting in most of my tanks is fairly dim so I'm sure that plays a role also. Maybe the problem could be stress?

So basically a blackwater setup would be ideal for maintaining their light coloration.
