Standardized nomenclature for where fish originate?

I have an enigma...is there a simple, standardized way to refer to areas of the world where fish originate? I've read terms like "New World", "South American", "African", "Eurasian", "Asian", "Indo-Pacific"... When referring to fish from an area of the world without singling out countries, do you go with terms like "Central American" or do you refer to tectonic plate descriptions? *Is* there a standardized nomenclature used in ichthyology to describe where fish originate?

Thanks so much!

There isn't a standard way of indicating biogeographical units. The nearest to a standard for freshwater organisms is the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World.
