Information about "Registered Keepers" in CLOG

Post by bekateen »

This isn't a report of a CLOG data issue, but more a question about how part of the CLOG works:

When reading the Registered Keepers of any particular species, there are five pieces of information presented. A hypothetical entry might look like this:

(14) bekateen (p: 2, k: 5), who also notes: "Very active; likes frozen brine shrimp."

The five pieces of information are
  1. An enumeration of the member in terms of the relative time they started keeping that species (so if my username appears as "(14) bekateen" then it means I am the 14th person to report keeping this species).
  2. The member's username (obvious)
  3. a term p: #
  4. a term k: #, which clearly indicates how many specimens of this fish the member is keeping; and
  5. Personal comments which the member provides about their fish, taken from comments on their "My Fish" page.
My question is, what is the significance of the “p: #” beside the member's username in the registered keepers of a CLOG? Is it the number of photos the person has uploaded, either of aquaria or of their fishes or in their BLOGs. But for any given fish, we are only able to post one photo of that species for display on our "My Fish" page. So how can p: ever be greater than 1? The other possibility I considered was that p: # referred to the number of photos a member has contributed for display on the CLOG page for that species. But that doesn't work either.

I realize that this is a question about a trivial detail of this website; but I notice these kinds of things and I like to understand how they operate.

Thanks, Eric

I think I figured it out on my own: If a member registers the same fish species more than once, then the p: # appears. For example, I keep both normal and albino , so I've registered as owning them twice. And my Registered Keepers info reads, (491) bekateen (p: 2, k: 19) for that cory.

I tested this by adding another entry for to My Fish, and this action immediately created the "p: 2" entry for me in the Registered Keepers. Then I deleted this entry from My Cats, and the p value disappeared.

But I still wonder about the choice of the letter "p" for this... Oh, is it "populations?" That would explain the statement on the front page that this website has 38,687 populations in 4,270 registered aquaria.

If I'm still getting this wrong, I'd appreciate more info. But if I figured it out correctly, you don't need to respond and you can move it to All Resolved Issues.

Cheers, Eric

EDIT: The only puzzle I find in this explanation is that for , the "Registered keepers" list on the CLOG page shows me with one population (i.e., no p number since p=1; which is correct); but if you navigate through the 38,687 populations link on the PC front page, then click on the View keepers link for A. cf. cirrhosus, then it shows me as "p:2". So there is a conflict between the two displays, and that doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, p=population, good deduction. I am not sure about the discrepancy, I'll need to check that one out.
