Happily my small group of are spawning repeatedly and although the spawns are small and the survival rates moderate, I can hope to end up with a decent-size herd of them (currently 6 adults, 1 juvenile and 7 well-grown fry).

I'm considering setting up a larger dedicated biotope tank for them. I've got a 240 litre 4-foot tank that will become available very soon. I've not found much info on the exact origin of but I have found several photos of the habitat of or which I guess would be similar.

Are there any sympatric (long-snouted?) species of Corydoras that would live with ? And/or any recommendations for other suitable fish that would live in the same locations (i.e. more specific than just Rio Negro - I'm thinking fish that would inhabit the same portions of river bank or tributaries)?

I can't answer your question (not that I refuse too because I'll have to be killed, rather I don't know the answer). But it's nice to see your babies - well done and good luck building a little herd of these lovely corys.

Thanks Eric! They're doing well and today I'm going to move the fry out of the nursery into a grow-out tank.

I haven't yet found a formal scientific description of Corydoras burgessi; some websites suggest there isn't one. Fishbase is pretty vague on these fish, and even our own Planet Catfish profile has very little information specific to the species. I think they're lineage 9?

I'll keep looking for more!

I am getting confused.

Planet Catfish and Seriously Fish both list the type locality for as the Rio Unini. This river flows eastwards into the Rio Negro about half way between Barcelos and Manaus, about 50km above the confluence of the Negro into the Amazon. Considering the total length of the Negro is 2250km, I think that makes it 'Lower Negro'.

However, Planet Catfish, Seriously Fish and Fishbase all list this fish in the 'Upper Negro'. Seriously Fish says 'Specimens for the aquarium trade are apparently collected in the vicinity of São Gabriel da Cachoeira which is type locality for the similar-looking C. adolfoi'. This is also the location shown on Planet Catfish's map. It is about 500km upstream of the Rio Unini.

My understanding was that these gold-shouldered Corydoras species were highly localised in individual tributaries of the Rio Negro. Yet the statements above suggest that the fish is normally collected 500km upstream of its type locality. If they were collected from the Rio Unini then surely they would be exported via Manaus, not from São Gabriel da Cachoeira.

Can anyone clarify?

yes, that's the right one. The other species described in this paper is the mimetic Pimelodella rambarrani, which is a Brachyrhamdia now. The type locality is "reportedly Rio Unini... according to the collector, Mr. Adolfo Schwartz."
