I am looking for a positive ID on the fish attached. They are being sold as L398, but the seller is not certain. I have some concerns.

Not in my opinion. They look like common
(possibly
, but I doubt it).
If your seller is not certain, I hope they didn't pay too much for them.
Sorry, Eric

@bekateen
The seller was asking $30 per fish. I am guessing he paid half for them.

I wish I could get $15 for each clown pleco... I've got about 7 left over F1s and over 30 F2s, plus one male is sitting on eggs and another male is trapping a female! They are breeding like gangbusters!!!
SALE: All clown plecos at my house for sale, price slashed to $12 each*!
*that's still about twice the retail price in my area

My objective was to get a positive ID from those who are familiar with the species whether they are L398 or not as I had a few concerns.
The seller understood that a mistake has been made and duly returned the money I paid.
Wasn't planning on buying P. Maccus for any price.
Thanks for all the help in IDing that they were not L398s.
All good in Pleco land

Perhaps my eyes are not seeing the details. The photo looks like a poorly colored L306. What about the photos shows them to be L398?

Not L306. The bands on L306 are broad and distinct, and stay that way with age.

Barry, here is one of my L306 for reference. I think the difference is obvious
