Which upside down Syno?

I picked these up today as "need gone. Now!" rescues. They were ID'd as Lace Catfish, S. nigrita, 8 months to a year old. Their dorsal fins seem better developed and lacier than the dorsals in the pics of S. nigrita I see. Not a species I know personally. They do swim upside down at the top and under the rocks. Could they be young S. eupterus? They are lovely fish, regardless.

I could not get better still shots and I can't upload the video. Sorry.

This is a temporary tank, no worries, I will set up a bigger one after I test a few. They have been sitting for a while

I think S eupterus. If they were identified correctly in the petshop, S nigrita was far more black.

But the dorsal is rather specific - I can't name any other synodontus with this kind of dorsal

Thanks. The more I look, the more I think young eupterus, but maybe not quite? I don't know where the gal who gave them to me got them but she thought they would be small fish and just needed to give them away, right away.

Yup, this S. eupterus, you didnt mention its length (SL) but with the barring on the tail it looks relatively young.

Sorry, thought I did. She said 8 mo to a year, mere toddlers. The tank is a temporary 20 US gal. holding tank, so without tail maybe 3 inches? One is substantually larger than the other.

Wish I could post the vid, they look very much like eupterus in motion. I'll wait for one more opinion, but if we are all agreed, I am going to claim eupterus as a species

To my eye they look very much like eupterus. A bit goofy - as if they are short body but they may grow out of it. I'd not be surprised if they stayed short body. Most of these fish are raised as cheaply (and hence carelessly) as possible in SE Asia, or so much I understand.

They are pretty young. The photos shorten the body a bit and now you mention it, they seem a bit shorter than my last ones. I got those as adults, tho, so don't know their developmental stages.
