Welcome to Planetcatfish!
As for your catfish, I suspect it's in the genus
, but I don't know what species. I've read somewhere that they are difficult to ID when young.
Hopefully someone else can be more helpful.
Cheers, Eric

Agree with the African big-eyed catfish genus. Agree with the great challenge of the species ID. There is no risk IMHO of them growing that large in your care. The biggest ones I have ever come across, including half a dozen of mine, wouldn't exceed 1' by much. The most common species appear to be the nigricaudus and related. Ornatus too are kept but these are obvious and yours is not it.

The adipose fin doesn't match Chrysichthys sp.

Agreeable. The photo is distorted from the fish being too close to the lens but you may be right on that, Ben.
Some species in this genus have a bigger and longer adipose than others, e.g., this same nigricaudus
https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/im ... e_id=14154, but not as large and long as in the above photo.

Yes, I can see what you mean. The photo of the fish is not clear but I can tell the adipose fin is different.
Thanks, Eric

To my amateur ID eye, it looks like a spotless version of my
.
I acquired mine from Wildwoods' online store via
https://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk/shops-detail?id=54 , which was listed as a Synodontis notatus, back in 2011 IIRC. Lovely catfish that has grown from ~8cm Sl to ~10cm SL, but very shy for a syno, it lives with my Synodontis nigriventris group and two Microsynodntis sp. 1s in my tank of small peaceful fish (the only other of a similar size in my L204 plec). On a few occasions I've tried mixing it with my some of my other larger Mochokidae, but it gets absolutely terrorised.

Adipose doesn't match M.castaneus, provenance and/or better pictures may help with an id.
