Vulture Catfish has black filaments protruding from body?

Is this normal and if so, what are these black short "hairs"? Click and enlarge to see clearly.

Never seen that before. I imagine that this group doesn't get odontodes, or do they? What's left? Parasites? Some kind of funky mucus extrusion from lateral line pores?

I would be tempted to try pulling one out with a pair of tweezers.

These look like epithelial projections that are prominent in some catfishes (e.g. in and particularly ). If you look closely, the black projections are present right where the black spots are, and the pale projections are in places where the spots aren't.
