Iquitos Rio Nanay fish settling into new tank

Post by bekateen »

Hi all,

I finally received the surviving fish from my collecting trip to Iquitos (described here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=50164).

Sadly none of the whiptails I collected survived before shipping, and neither did the green-spot Ancistrus nor the . The survived until getting shipped, but the shipper packed them with corys; sadly all were dead on arrival, apparently from self-poisoning, when I received the box in the USA. But praise God the I caught did, as did the Microglanis I bought which were collected above the Rio Tapiche.

I've housed four medium to large (>6" long TL) common-looking Ancistrus, four adult , and 6 small (2" TL) Batrochoglanis cf. raninus in the new tank. I hope they adapt to captivity well and accept the prepared foods I offer them.

Here's the tank. Feedback appreciated.

Cheers, Eric

Looking good Eric, sorry to hear about the fish which didn't make it, hopefully those that did thrive. Good luck with them!

@yellowcat, the Batrochoglanis cf. raninus are growing well. Now about 8cm SL. Tank is full of suspended algae so I can't see most of them, or the Ancistrus, but the two I caught look nice.

Cheers, Eric

Sorry not everything made it but what did is a great selection! I have kept Tetranematichthys wallacei in the past, a really interesting fish! What are they feeding on?

I was feeding them a variety of frozen, freeze dried, and live foods, and various flakes. Sadly, I'm not convinced the Tetranematichthys ever really ate much, as they all withered slowly and eventually died. Conversely, the Ancistrus and Batrochoglanis are growing well.

Sad to hear...I think they are one of those fish that need lots of live food (worms/river shrimp etc.) initially and then try and introduce other foods over time once they are feeding well.
