Microglanis aff. poecilus from Rio Nanay

Post by bekateen »

Hi All,

Today I moved the (which I caught in a creek of the Rio Nanay in Peru last July, described here) to a permanent home. Before releasing them in their new tank, I made this quick video of them.

After five months in captivity, they have fattened out, but they are still tiny, about 25-30 mm SL. The worms in the video are California blackworms and give a good idea of scale.

Cheers, Eric

Hi Eric,

Do you reckon those males are about full size and the females will grow another 30-50% or do you think they all have some growing to do?

Cheers,

Hi Jools,

I don't know the answer. I suspect they have growing to do, but I hadn't seen them clearly for a few weeks and I'm surprised by the girth on a few of them. So maybe they'll grow more, but maybe these Peruvian "aff. poecilus" are among the micro species that remain about 30 mm SL. Real get almost 70 mm SL; but all the specimens we caught, along with the Rio Blanco specimens we bought, were tiny (<30 mm SL), so I'm very eager and curious to grow them out, to gain a better estimate of maximum SL.

I'm already planning a return trip for next July-August, so hopefully I'll have more live material to work with.

Cheers, Eric
