Catfish Photography

Post by HAMidtun »

G'day catfish people!

I hope I posted this in the right section of the forum, and if not, just point me in the right direction.
Aaaaanyyyway...

For years and years I've been working with my camera photographing mostly reptiles, my main passion and hobby. However, after I started working in a pet-shop with a decent aquarium department I have slowly but surely started to spend more and more time in the aquarium room.

So, I though, why not try out fish photography. The first few rounds turned out alright, so I flicked them off to a coworker in our "sister store" who is waaaayyy deeper in the aquarium hobby than I am. He thought the photos looked fantastic. Also it turns out, he's going to be giving a talk on catfish sometime in the near future on non pleco and corydora catfish. When he asked me to help him with photos of these species I jumped on the opportunity, and I thought I'd share the results here. I'll of course photograph Pleco and Corydora in the future, but for now it's the species outside these two massive groups that are in my rangefinder.

I'll try to share the results as I go with one post pr species I photograph.

Let's kick off this photo thread/blog with one of the cooler species, at least in my opinion, the Black Lancer .

Ok, so this next catfish does not have a full species name attached to it, and I could not find the specific Cat-eLog page that corresponds with the information I received regarding this species. This, , is what looks the closest to the individual photographed in my mind, but if you folks know the species feel free to tell me :)

More great photos!

Unfortunately, without exact collection information it is almost impossible to identify any Pimelodella sp. Seemingly every place I have ever collected in South America has a brownish-gray Pimelodella sp with a dark lateral stripe. In fact looking at Pimelodella sp(1) in the Catelog... I think there are three different fish. The fish in the top two photos has a dusky band in the dorsal fin. The fish in the third photo lacks dorsal bands and appears to have a longer adipose and fish in the last photo looks to have a dark lateral stripe that continues beyond the caudal peduncle and on to the caudal fin.
Somtimes we just can't match a name with a fish... And that's ok.

Sorry, not wanting to deflect from the post but the mention of reminded me that I had decided to move the first two images in that entry to some time ago and never did it. This is the relatively commonly exported Villavicenio browner-than-grey fish with a stripe, a black flash in the dorsal and a longish/low adipose fin with a slightly larger upper caudal fin lobe which does enter the trade from time to time. That leaves two species in sp(1) which, I agree, don't look like the same species.

My need to put a label on, sort and file everything is shivering at the thought.... hehe
I am not used to leaving photos of animals unidentified (from reptile and bird photography), but after a bit of insect photography I have learned to live with it. However, I'll dig a bit around and see if I can find the location and some info regarding the collection of this population.

Cheers,

:-) It's size of the eye and white hard fin rays that are the "easy" differences to spot.

Not the best of shots, but in my defense, these were taken at the very start of my, until now, rather short fish photography career.

I'm starting to run out of "outside" catfish, and thus the first L-number catfish has found itself in-front of my camera.
According to my colleague this catfish has few to none photos out there, The L-327 (). A lovely little L-number with some gorgeous spots.
Again, need to split it into two posts (too many photos :P)

Last post of the weekend, and a species/population that I've photographed before.

Since there weren't any more photos of this species/population out there I decided to re-visit it and do some detail shots and photograph two new individuals.

Thanks! Always nice to see fellow Norwegians on these forums :D
I see you're located in Stavanger. If you pop by Bergen I recommend dropping by Midtun Zoo to have a squiz. We keep quite a few cool species :D

So, there isn't a specific section dedicated to Catfish Photography apart from the species photos you find in the Cat e-Log. I just started a thread within the "Speak Easy" section to showcase my photography, a bit of shameless self-promotion /:)
