Finally! A Tatia gyrina spawn!

Post by Catfish-ologist »

Hello all, today I was vacuuming debris out of a large plant in my 150 gallon community tank when I slurped out some woodcat eggs. There are only T. gyrina in this tank! The eggs might be about 3 days old, and by the time I got them all into the basket almost all of the about 35 eggs had hatched! I know a few active forum goers have been trying their luck with this species to no avail. I am happy to say I have now spawned my 7th woodcat species! I had pretty much given up on this project, I had taken them out of isolation, stopped feeding them blood worms, and I was even considering selling them. These are the first wild fish I have spawned entirely on pellets. Hopefully I will have luck with raising these, as it is one of my favorite species due to its coloration and small size.
Blurry video of eggs #-O :
Cheers!

Congratulations!

More people need to be breeding woodcats!

Here's how to use YouTube links:

Your link (URL): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Zfjp6KeJ-nk

Put only the unique code for your video in the YouTube links like this:

Then it will work.

Cheers. Eric

Congratulations, that’s fantastic news.
I have a group of 6 in a 10g on their own and have had no luck with them despite lots of bloodworms, increased water changes. I’ve even changed around the tank a couple times incase they needed somewhere else to spawn!!
Any idea what the trigger was? Maybe I’ll go back to pellets!!

After keeping almost 20 woodcat species I wouldn't recommend keeping them on pellets. These are the only wild fish that have spawned on pellets for me. I recommend bloodworms, I keep every last Tatia species i'm trying to breed on bloodworms. Yes, I do know what the trigger was, and it wasn't supposed to happen lol. First I did my normal water change. Then about 2 days later I had an auto feeder malfunction, it started rotating at midnight and never stopped. By the time I woke up about $10 in pellets had been dumped into the tank. This massive feeding gave them an opportunity to gorge, and then I gave them two massive water changes that same day to clean up the mess the auto feeder made. So for me it was 3 back to back after changes and a really big feeding. I would also recommend a spawning mop in your tank. Mine spawned in a plant, hence showing it spawns similar to other Tatia species. Since i'm one of only two people to ever spawn this species data is limited, however I am happy to have a spawn and I will log the data. Note: the fry are very active, Ex: when I shine the gyrina fry they swim like crazy, and when I shine my altae fry they barely move at all.
Cheers!

Well there is something in the air.... my T. gyrina laid eggs last night! I had been feeding them a little more heavily than usual and changing 10% water everyday for the last 3 days. Eggs are quite different than T.intermedia in that they are not in a blob together, but are all laid under the spawning mop together. Also, there are only approx 10-20 eggs, and not approx 100 that I get with intermedia.

Here is a quick picture of them:

Sean, how are you doing with your fry, any tips? What are you feeding yours?

Eric was right... Mine were not fertile ( you could see that they were a little white in the picture), and after 3-4 days they melted away! Ill keep trying now that I know where they lay them and how.

Sorry for the late response, I didn't see your original reply until it was bumped up to the top of the forum today. Congrats! You are only the third person to ever spawn these! It sucks your's were infertile, they will spawn again though. Just for your future reference, I'm currently feeding them sera micron and liquifry. I have found the rare and difficult species must be weaned on liquid food (strigata, altae, and moijiri). I had no idea what to expect on these, so I am playing it safe and giving it to them as well. I still have some fry, I have never raised this species before so I expect a high mortality rate. Hopefully this spring luck will get me a few more species active. I must have gotten over 60 spawns from all of my fish in the past month! I am working on selling off a lot of grow outs to free up room for new spawns.
