Hi All,

I have no association with this seller, but wondered what you all think these are? They dont look like musaica to me, but maybe its just them being in a blue tank! If you look at the colors on the caudal and other fins and body it does not match at all.
Thoughts??

I believe those are Balroglanis Sp. Peru.
I know the guy that runs that place. He has helped me get some pretty unique woodcats!

Hi Catfish-ologist... Is that the same thing as what we have here as ?

The photos of macracathus in the Cat-elog do look similar to what i would call B. sp. peru. The truth is I have never actually seen a confirmed macracanthus in person. The photos in Steve's book of what he calls macracanthus are very different from anything else I have seen. I have been working on trying to fix some of the data on Auchenipteridae on PC, I just have been short on time, and I need a lot of data to back up any changes. There are so many mishaps on the internet and in books as far as labeling. Some things might always stay a mystery. It is just my opinion that these look very similar in pattern to what I have seen in B. sp. peru. I am most likely wrong, however there is no way to tell for sure until I can get my hands on one. I have been trying to find the tank space to get that whole group he has available, but alas that might never happen.

I agree on the photos in B. macracanthus looking like B. sp. peru as per Steve's book and matching the description in there too.

B. macracanthus is a Rio Negro fish and so relatively likely to be exported. Fishes from the Madre de Dios are not often exported. Although the determination in the cat-elog is not based on this.

Do we know if B. sp. Peru is restricted to the Madre de Dios drainage or if it is elsewhere in Peru? I will try to remember to ask Steve when I see him next weekend.

I'm currently keeping 8 Centromochlus c.f macracanthus and the look exactly like these sp. Peru

Good to know. I purchased 3 dwarf honeycomb woodcats and am in love with them, trying to find more. Will check this place out.

I forgot to ask Steve about these, but I will. I don't yet understand the logic behind them - the fish we see aren't exported from Southern Peru and I also need to dig out the description of C. macracanthus from IEoF too. Will let you know.

For now, sadly, Balroglanis isn't accepted as valid (CoF) although some authors in addition to Steve do consider it valid or at least valid as a subgenus.
