Saw this in a local shop. Never seen anything like this before. Looks like a color/pattern 'strain' Syno. schoutedeni? Or could it be a new species?

That's an interesting fish! What is the store calling it?

I'll put in a vote for Mochokiella paynei .

100% with Lee, although I can't see the characterstic feathery barbles, the more rounded shape of the caudal fin looks spot on.

Eric, yes they were just calling them "banded catfish".

I feel myself leaning toward Mochokiella paynei as well. I'd forgotten about this fish. The pattern matches. All the old photos I've seen of this fish were of more 'angular' specimens with more pointed fins. Maybe sex dimorphism, or this occurs as they get older? This specimen was about 45-50mm.

Thanks for the suggestion guys.
