Anybody ever try using "Blue Moon" light tubes? They are suppose to be good for looking at nocturnal fish. Do they really work well ?

Why spend a fortune on those when a regular red incandescent lightbulb does the same thing? Neither would upset the fish's nocturnal habits but apparently the red wavelengths have even less of an affect on them. Only thing the moonlight bulb has in it's favor is a more pleasing appearance but it's also a possibility that very subdued regular lighting (like nightlight bulbs) could allow them to behave normally.

Of course this all depends on the fish in question...

i have a blue moon tube. i think they're a bit too bright though. if you get one, get the smallest one you can, ie an 18" tube for a 4 foot tank. they're primarily designed with marine tanks in mind. i don't think they do the colours of the fish much justice, it makes fish a bit dull. dim lighting from your room is the best way to see your shy catfish i think.

The blue moon tubes that I use seem to have a good effect.
They cannot see me, yet I can see them easy, sort of like "cattie night vision".

Also, at $8USD, its a nice cheap thrill! :P

Sorry, had to use that icon?
