I've been using Seachem Neutral Regulator on my Syno tanks recently (flavitaeniatus, angelicus, decorus occellifer and eupterus - not all in the same tank!!) and noticed that it uses phosphate buffers. Is this OK for Synos? I know people who test for phosphate and aim to keep it down in their tanks - but to be honest I am not sure of its effect on fish. Any info to set me straight would be appreciated!

Its main problem is encouraging algal growth, rather than any direct effect on fish.

even worse, phosphates encourage growth of blue-green 'algae' or cyanobacteria.

those can foul up the water pretty bad.
it's nitrates that encourage true algae growth.
