Oyster shells in tank?

Me and the man went to Red Lobster the other night and had some raw oysters....one of the shells was quite large and would make a great cave for my smaller plecos so I brought it home and boiled it for a few moments but haven't put it in the tank yet. I just want to be sure...would it be ok to do so? Thanks!

It will buffer up your pH. If you have a low kH and want a method of making sure the pH never crashes, it will be fine. If your pH is already high and you don't want it any higher, then I wouldn't add it.

Yes, they are great as both caves and a buffer. You can even bury them in the substrate for a convenient and invisible buffering solution. I never even bother boiling the shells... shuck fresh oysters and them toss them in the tank, leaving the fish to clean up any scraps of flesh.
