The first picture is C. delphax, there is no such species as C. melenistius melanistius any more the fish was given full species status by Isbruecker in n 2001.

Pic 2 I would say was C. adolfoi but the black substrate in the picture is not doing it any favors, they naturally live over a sandy substrate, which will enhance the fishes colour better.

Pic 3 are what you have stated, C. ambiacus and C. ornatus

Could be but as I have said the black substrate is affecting the colour of the fish

How exactly does a black substrate affect the color of corys? What color shows their colors best?

I have black gravel in my tank, but now I am considering changing it if it will improve the color of my corys.

I heard brown is better. my main tank uses fluorite, so that's reddish-brown.
gonna get some dennerle brown gravel for the phototank next

what ever colour substrate is used it will reflect against the fish, the way to prove this is to take pictures of the same species of fish over different coloured bases.

Light coloured sand is a natural substrate where many Corys are found, that as well as clay.

For the best effects in a photo tank large pebbles or pieces of wood with some background plants work well.
