Lophiosilurus alexandri and gar?

Can a foot long lophiosilurus alexandri live together with a two foot spotted gar in a 600 gallon aquarium? Does the lophiosilurus alexandri require alkaline conditions (pH seven-eight) given their need for sand to thrive? Do they require brackish conditions? Can the gar likewise also tolerate that alkalinity or slight salinity when needed?

Yes

No. The presence of sand has nothing to do with the pH of the water.
Do they require brackish conditions?
No

Whould sand affect a gar's health?

Therefore, is sand a necessity to keep lophiosilurus alexandri? If so, why? Also, what salinity condition (specific gravity) can lophiosilurus alexandri take and still be healthy?

You seem insistent on keeping the Lophiosilurus in a brackish water environment. If you want to flush your money down the toilet that way, I can't help you.

I think you misinterprated me. Obviously the ultimate aim of almost all aquarists is to keep their fishes in the best condition possible. I am no exception. What I was asking you in my previous post was whether or not the lophiosilurus catfish can be kept in a brackish water environment.

No."

What I was asking in the post was whether I can keep the lophiosilurus in a brackish water environment. You did not mention if it was bad to keep one in brackish water.

Also I am not insisting that I keep the lophiosilurus in a brackish water. I asked whether the suggestion was suitable as the 600 gallon pond that I was going to use for the gar and lophiosilurusis is brackish water. My apologies for not informing you on that.

However you can be sure that I do care for my fishes. In fact, my motive behind all the questions in this and all of my previous posts is to find out how best I can keep my fishes. I hope you can understand that.

but why is that pond brackish?

what's in there?

because neither gar nor Lophiosilurus needs salt; it would be much easier to put fresh water in there.

then you can add a big Pleco, perhaps a big Dorad etc.
