Tissue Protrusions from Gills on Bronze Cory

I've got a bronze cory in a 15-20 gallon planted tank.. The pH is a little low but everything else is OK.. There is also another bronze cory, 4 Rhasbora, and a small plecko in the tank as welll. All other fish seem to be healthy showing good color etc.
a) Temerature range. 79-80'
b) pH. - Was measured at 5. but I'm uncertain about that... I use reverse osmosis bottled water..
f) Water change frequency - Once every 4-6 weeks
The cory's age is at least 5 yrs and may be a bit more... He has pale tissue protrusions extending from his gills.. These do not appear to be any kind of parasite..
I'm really at a loss as to what these are and what to do about it... If anyone has had a similar experience, could you please share... I'd really want to do something for this guy, burt just don't konw what to do...
