Hi, I'm new to the forum and would like to ask some questions about red-tails. I'm interested in purchasing a 14 inch Amazon Red-Tail from my local fish store. I have a 180 gallon available for the fish/ with a wet-dry filter with the heaters in it because I heard that the fish is better off with stuff like that not directly in the tank. Will this tank work for a while? 72"-24"-24". I also read that Red tails can get a mucus like film around them when tranfered into a new tank?plus they are fatigue when first purchased. Thanks.

Any other usful information would be greatly useful.I would also like some personal experience tips on caring for this Fish. I do have a great deal of experience with my 18" Tigershovel-nose Catfish, How similar is the care of a red tail to a tiger?

the best advice one could give you is that unless you have unlimited funds and time to devote to a RTC..
you would be better off purchasing other smaller fish that wouldnt out grow your aquarium.. there have been numerous discussions on this topic which if you took the time to view them all you would see that these type of catfish are unsuitable for the normal Aquaria, and believe me. it is extremely rare for public aquaria in the UK to take in this type of fish. and your intended purchase will soon outgrow its proposed 6 footer.. also, when considering filtration for these fish one should use at the minumum 2 times the normal recommended filtration for the type of aquarium and regular water changes have to be done in order to maintain water quality..

I have considered that I'm not prepared for a RTC, and I'm thinking of getting a Freshwater Stingray, thanx

what iwould suggest iz do either.....
get 5 - 7 pim pictus
or

Get teacup stingrays.Fill the bottom of the tank with white sand because you will see them better. You could maybee feed them crab meat. i think they would lead a happy and healthy life

You might need to go post in the speak easy for help with stingrays, but what attracts people to catfish also works for rays, so there is bound to be help or direction there.

Thanks for the help, I ended up buying 2 Motoro rays around 7" diameter. The are very healthy, I just have sand in the tank are the any catfish that would work with them?

What other fish do you have? What about some mean old Ompok?
