Hey folks, there's another new member about. I'm a huge cory and pleco (all kinds) fan, though I don't have as many of these cats as I would like (due to money and space issues). I've got five (planning to add another) corydoras septentrionalis, and one 'common' bristlenose. I've often used Planet Catfish for reference, so I'm happy to be able to become a member, and give something back.

I've got a quick newbie question. Why is it that words like c i c h l i d and p l e c o have asterisks in them, when used on the forums? Does this happen when you use other words like cyprinid and characin? Just curious...

Becsue 'net superstition says that you're not supposed to mention the "p l e c o" on the 'net. Same with cichlids, as far as I can tell.

The forum aparently has an automatic filter that does this automagically for you, so you don't need to type pl*co, it just replaces p-l-e-c-o with p-l-*-co.

I can see why this sort of superstition starts: A lot of people open their mouth about fish either when they just got them (and they are vulnerable to die from "New fish in the tank syndrome") or when they have a problem with them (and they are vulnerable to dieing from being sick).
