I just got two 4" long Synodontis, I thought they were Multipunctatus, the store just said "Synodontis" and they healthy, good looking, and a bargain too good to pass up. I am trying to get some good photos to post. I read the profiles and it said multis have a white belly, whereas these have small dark spots on their belly. I notice their whiskers are black on the tips, but white closer to the face. The two fish look very similar, except one is a little more brownish and one is more grey in color. What other info should I gather to help those experts among you to identify them, besides of course the photos? I'll gather the info, and post some photos.

Yes, that general look, but my fish are not 'dwarf'. They are pretty hefty. I've seen Petricola, and love them, but never bought any because I've been afraid they are too small for my tank. I bought these because they are a solid 4", maybe even 4.5".

Without a pic it is hard to tell. Did you ask your LFS when you purchased the fish what it was. We never get in a synodontis ?. They are always labeled as something in particular. I would be surprised if they couldn't tell you what it was, it surley came in labeled as something more specific.

Nope, it was just labeled as African Synodontis. I have some other new young Syno. multi's and when you compare them, the larger 4" seem almost green/brown, as opposed to the white/black of the young multis. I am thinking they are Syno. Njasse, but the thumbnail photos don't show any older adult fish.

If it looks like the petricola, but larger and a greenish tinge to it... check out the polli, they always look green to me.
