What is happening in Brasil

There have been rumors about suspending of the fish export out from Brasil for some time and that L46 should be extinct from the wild.
Some part of the rumors is true but most of them not, when rumors are spread around the world it always make it bigger then it is so instead of just listening I have put some questions to people that can confirm or deny them directly.
I hope this will solve your thoughts so we can have an end of all rumors.

Hi,

I hope you can help me with some questions about Loricariids and exporting from Brasil, there are
some rumors around the world circulating and some of it seems to be true.
I know there are restrictions and protections for some species and it's really understandable and one of my
questions is about Hypancistrus zebra from Rio xingu if that species not longer are allowed to be exported
or if there are or would be a quota system in the future like other endangerous species?

Next question is about something I heard for several weeks ago, there was some kind of razzia in Manaus
at exporters for ornamental fishes and some was arrested...is this true and in that case why was this happend?
And is it also true that is not allowed to export L-nb or loricariid's from Manaus and in that case if it's only
temporary?

Sincerely
Janne Ekström

Dear Janne:

What you said are true. Zebra is temporarily prohibited for trading, pending a study and evaluation. Brazilian ichthyologists are currently revising a new list of permitted species with IBAMA. The new list probably will include 600-700 freshwater fishes that can be exported. It is an impossible task to inspect fishes.

Some Manaus exporters had been put in jail by federal Police (equivalent to FBI) for 2-3 days for cheating on fishes expoeted (outside label not equal to boxed species) and quantity (label 400 but 1,200 fishes inside).

Unfortunately, traders are incline to cheat, I have heard some of the big names in the trade were in trouble like, ****, now some Manaus exporters.

Thank you for interesting in our project.

Happy holidays,

Labbish

If you consider that this new list of fishes contains almost 700 species and it was just above 400 species before that was permitted for export from Brasil...so will you see more species at retailers next year. The list is not finished yet and some of these species will still have a qouta (maximum/year).

I think I'm going to make this thread a sticky. The information is something I get numerous questions about. Thanks again to everyone for contributing to it!

I have translated a definitive article on the subject which is hosted at the http://www.datz.de website. A German version is available there too, but the English version can be found here.

I have "unstickied" this post as it doesn't appear to be as necessary as it was.
