Hi!

This morning i had a bit of boiled egg left over (honestly i left it over to try this out) and tried it as a fishfood. I was suprised how well accepted this was! Sicklids, Ctenopomas and Synos beat up on each other to get to the egg pieces...
Is there any reason not to feed egg? About natural ocurrances in home habitats i was thinking waterbird eggs that drop in the water from time to time and also is there much difference in the proteines of a fishegg vs. birdegg?
Ive never read that anybody feeds egg on a regular basis (as an additional food option of course not daily)

Not sure that I would feed it as a staple, but I saw captive raised Arapaima (Pirarucu) being raised on broken up hard boiled eggs in Leticia. Many older fish books also recommend ground yolk (after it has been hard boiled) as a food for fry.

Hard boiled eggs is actually one of the earliest published foods for raising fish in a home aquarium.

eggyolk is the main ingredient of Liquifry; you might have heard about that one.

it's a fairly old and famous brand of artificial fry-foods.

other kitchenfoods are also usable, esp many veggies of course that can be used by the L-numbers-crowd.

another great food is oatmeal flakes. non-sweeted ones. (main ingredient of many muesli's and cereals).

I can remember two big fat Pterodoras that really loved that; I used it sometimes as a treat. Characins liked it too.

Not sure how good this is but I give my betta chicken beef veggies all copped to there mouth size

Not catfishes but my Astatotilapia burtonis spawned yesterday after having them for a couple of weeks. They were really skinny and banged up when i got them, so maybe the egg (or the ruccola salad) has worked in giving some strength back. Just a theory.

I sometimes make a paste food using gelatin as a base. Depending on the types of fish you want to feed different ingredients are used. I buy both krill and spirulina powders and add canned salmon and or frozen peas. I freeze the mixtures in sheets and scrape off what is needed.

Re the use of "chicken" eggs as fishfood: This does go WAY back. In 1833 there was a business in Canton, MA [USA, southwest of Boston] that produced goldfish food for retail sale. The ingredients? The food consisted of "...a mixture of flour paste, mixed with the yolks of hard boiled eggs." I, unfortunately, was not there to purchase any of this.

Most probably foods like this (no doubt orignally developed as caged bird food) could eventually be tracked back into the 1700's.
