Type Locality Rio Tocantins near mouth of rio Lajeado, Porto Franco, Tocantins, Brazil.
Etymology Greek, hemi = the half. While the Greek, agkistron = hook, is thought to be the root of the term ancistrus, hemiancistrus can be taken to mean that these species have a part (not exactly HALF) of the features of the genus Ancistrus, but not ALL of the features.

Size 142mm (5.6") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Very similar to L012 and L013 from the Rio XingĂș. Elongate odontode on cheek 40-60. No dark spots on the ventral surface of head and body. Fins and lateral and dorsal plates of head and body with numerous dark dots. First anal-fin pterygiophore greatly expanded and exposed. Eyes large, dorsoventrally placed. Lips well-developed, occupying most of ventral surface; lower lip mostly covered with papillae, except for a smooth band near border of lips. Caudal fin I, 14, I; slightly concave, upper lobe shorter than lower lobe
