| Etymology | Sorubi is the Brazilian local name for this fish (and several other pimelodids), latinised to become Sorubim. This specific epithet refers to its elongated (elongatus=prolonged, elongated) head and body shape. |

| Identification | No other pimelodid genus possesses a dark horizontal stripe stretching entire length of head and body. Very generally, Sorubim with spots are usually S. elongatus. They are more of a black water species and, as with most such species, tend towards more variable, spotted patterning. |
