| Etymology | Callichthys: From the Greek kallos, meaning beautiful and ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the color pattern. The specific epithet comes from the Latin serra meaning saw, and labium, lip, in allusion to the serrated free margin of lower lip. |

| Identification | Viewing the underside of the fish shows the lower lip to have a ragged, wavy profile. Young fish have a more striking vertically barred colouration. |
| Sexing | Males develop a thickened bright orange first ray in the pectoral fin, where females have a thin first ray. |

| Distribution | Described from drainages in the upper Orinoco River, near La Esmeralda, Venezuela and the headwatersof the Negro River, tributary of the Amazon River, both in Brazil and Venezuela. Orinoco Amazon, Middle Amazon (Solimoes) |
