When young, Loricaria spp. can be differentiated from the similar Rineloricaria spp. by their more feathered sucker-mouths. In adults this difference is considerably more evident.
Proc. Calif. Acad. Sci. (Ser. 2)v. 2 - pp36 Aqualog shows Loricaria simillima as L010. Aqualog also presents L010a, known commonly as the red lizard cat. This species is often considered to be a colour morph of Hemiloricaria lanceolota, but reaches a different adult size and exhibits totally different odontodal growth.
