Type Locality Branco River drainage, St. Ignatius, 1.9 miles north-northeast of Lethem, 3°21'21''N, 059°48'19''W, Takutu River, Rupununi, Guyana.

Etymology Rhinodoras: From the Greek rhinos, meaning nose, and doras, meaning skin (also a word commonly used in forming generic names for doradids); in reference to the unusual snout morphology. From original description: Named in honor of Jonathan William Armbruster, for his sterling contributions to the collection and study of neotropical fishes and for deftly leading the expedition to Guyana that resulted in the discovery of this species.
