Species Information | |
| Size | 28mm (1.1") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp. |
| Identification | Members of the genus Pseudolaguvia are small erethistid catfishes inhabiting hill streams
and large rivers in the area bordered by the Ganges River drainage (northern India) to the
west and the Sittang River drainage (east-central Myanmar) to the east.
They can be distinguished from other sisorids by their small size,a combination
of a thoracic adhesive apparatus with a median depression and prominent postcoracoid processes.
Pseudolaguvia ferruginea differs from congeners except for P. ferula, P. flavida, P. foveolata and P. muricata in having a more slender, elongate body (manifested as a smaller body depth at anus: 10.5-12.4 % SL vs. 12.8-18.4). It is distinguished from P. ferula in having a longer dorsal-fin base (14.9-17.3 % SL vs. 7.9-11.9) and wider head (20.1-22.2 % SL vs. 17.1-19.9), and from P. flavida in having a smooth (vs. serrated) anterior edge of the dorsal spine. It differs from P. foveolata in having a longer thoracic adhesive apparatus (reaching to midway between bases of last pectoral-fin ray and first pelvic-fin ray vs. middle of pectoral-fin base) and a shorter and deeper caudal peduncle (depth 2.4-2.8 times in its length, vs. 4.1) and from P. muricata in having shorter dorsal (13.0-16.6 % SL vs. 21.2-26.7) and pectoral spines (16.3-18.8 % SL vs. 26.8-35.7), a longer caudal peduncle (16.5-20.0 % SL vs. 12.6-15.7) and more vertebrae (31-32 vs. 28-30). Pseudolaguvia ferruginea also differs from all congeners except P. ferula in having a longer dorsal to adipose distance (14.2-17.3 % SL vs. 0.0-14.0). It is further distinguished from P. kapuri and P.ribeiroi in having a smooth (vs. serrated) anterior edge of the dorsal spine. |
| Sexing | Not known. |
Habitat Information | |
| Distribution | Known from the Raidak River, a tributary of the Sankosh River (in turn a tributary of the Brahmaputra River) in northern West Bengal state in India.
Indian waters, Padma, Jamuna, Brahmaputra (hover or click on these areas to show maps or find other species found there) |
| Other Parameters | The water should be cool and heavily oxygenated with a good flow as these fish occur in hill streams. Anything above 25°C will hamper long term survival as these fish tend to wither away at higher temperatures. |
Husbandry Information | |
| Feeding | Is known to take only live food like blood worms, frozen brine shrimp etc. Spot feeding will help in case tank mates are voracious feeders. |
| Furniture | Fine sand for the bottom and smooth pebbles / rocks. The type locality of P. ferruginea is a small river with clear water and a bottom consisting of gravel and sand. |
| Compatibility | A peaceful species suitable for a hillstream biotope.Extreme care should be taken while choosing their tankmates as these fish are extremely poor at competing for food. |
| Suggested Tankmates | Cyprinids like Barilius and Danios and Balitorine loaches like Homaloptera species. Other fish species that have been caught from this river include Garra lissorhynchus,Psilorhynchus balitora, Schistura beavani, S. savona, S. shebbearei,Amblyceps cf. apangi,Amblyceps mangois ,Pseudolaguvia shawi , Pillaia indica ,Badis blosyrus and Microphis cuncalus . |
