Etymology

Aspidoras: From the Greek aspis, meaning shield and doras, meaning skin; in reference to the bony plates. This specific epithet refers to the Celtic mythological deity, Belenos, which means "the one who shines," and is an allusion to the specimen's iridescent colour.
