Size 120mm (4.7") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification The genus Chaetostoma is not straight-forward to identify, but as a general rule, the species has spines behind the gill-cover (interopercular odontodes), no plates on the abdomen, and aside from C. platyrhynchus also lack plates on the snout edge. Different from Ancistrus by not having fleshy tentacles on the snout.

Overall dark gray to black with small white spots. Anal fin with 4 rays, Dorsal I 9. 5-13 cheek spines that are hook shaped. Distal edge of caudal fin is straight. No black spot at anterior base of dorsal fin.
Sexing Males have a somewhat larger and broader head, slimmer ventral sides and disproportionately large pelvic fins. Perhaps the over-sized pelvic fins play a large role in the fertilization of the eggs. By inverting these over the clutch of eggs, they prevent the sperm cells being carried away too fast in the current. The upper lip of males becomes swollen and ''fleshy'' when in peak spawning condition.

Distribution
Orinoco Show it on a map , Middle Orinoco, Apure, Guarico, Zuata (hover or click on these areas to show maps or find other species found there)
pH 6.2 - 7.2
Temperature 22.0-26.0°C or 71.6-78.8°F (Show others within this range)
Other Parameters Chaetostoma require lower than normal ''tropical'' temperatures and high levels of dissolved oxygen. The addition of powerheads with venturi devices and/or airstones to raise oxygen levels is highly recommended.
Jump to next section Husbandry Information
Feeding Omnivore. Will eat algae and small live or frozen food. Some individuals can be weaned onto pellet food although this usually takes some effort and trial and error on the part of the aquarist.
Furniture An ideal biotope tank would consist of a mixed sand/gravel substrate covered with rounded rocks stacked to form caves.
Compatibility Very peaceful. A good community fish for any aquarium with a slightly lower temperature and high dissolved oxygen content.
Suggested Tankmates Found alongside Farlowella acus, Chaetostoma guairensis, Creagrutus tetras, Rhamdia and Crenicichla geayi. Will thrive with other piedmont fishes that require similar conditions.
Breeding Not reported in the aquarium although more common species of Chaetostoma have reproduced in captivity.
