Common Name(s) Catminnow, Stonecat
Type Locality Eagle Creek [trib. of lower Kentucky R.], pool below bridge on State hwy 36, 3.5 mi. east of Jonesville, Grant Co., Kentucky, U.S.A.
Pronunciation no two russ - flah vuss
Etymology From the Greek notos, meaning back and oura, meaning tail. In reference to the confluent adipose and caudal fins. This specific epithet refers to the yellow (flavus=yellow) tint of some specimens.

Size 130mm (5.1") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Long, somewhat slender body. Light blotch on nape, cream-white spot at rear of dorsal fin base. Yellow, slate, or olive above; gray pelvic and anal fins; pectoral, dorsal and adipose fins dark at base,pale or white at edge. Larger in Lake Erie than in Mississippi R. basin.
Sexing Breeding male with swollen lips,enlarged cephalic epaxial muscles, and large bulbous genital papilla. Female with papilla with deep median groove ending in a small bump
General Remarks Inhabits rubble and boulder riffles and runs of creeks and small to large rivers, and gravel shoals of lakes .

Distribution North America: St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River) and Mississippi River basins from Quebec to Alberta in Canada, and south to northern Alabama, northern Mississippi, and northeastern Oklahoma, USA; Hudson River drainage in New York, USA.

Feeding Readily feeds on live and frozen foods. Will also adapt to flake and prepared foods for the aquarium.
Furniture Provide sand mixed with peat moss,pvc pipes,flat rocks and vegetation .
Compatibility Suitable for a cold water community tank.Ideal tank mates include small-mid sized North American native fishes such as darters and shiners.

Breeding Spawning occurs in the months of may-august. It is difficult in the aquarium however it has been done when wild caught specimens are added to aquariums with warmer temperatures than the river or drainage system they are captured from.
