| Identification | The genus Chaetostoma is not straight-forward to identify, but as a general rule, the species has spines behind the gill-cover (interopercular odontodes), no plates on the abdomen, and aside from C. platyrhynchus also lack plates on the snout edge. Different from Ancistrus by not having fleshy tentacles on the snout. 5 anal fin rays, 8 dorsal rays, 5 cheek spines. Cheek spines hooked. Distal edge of caudal straight. |
| Sexing | During the spawning season, the rostrum of males becomes engorged and swollen. Males posses larger, longer anal fins. |

| Compatibility | Not an aggressive fish but may squable with tankmates over choice hiding spots. Offer plenty of caves. |
| Suggested Tankmates | Other fastwater fishes. In nature found among other Chaetostoma spp., Rhamdia guairensis, Rivulus bondi, Ancistrus brevifilis, Farlowella acus, Hoplias malabaricus, Crenicichla geayi, and the tetra Creagrutus beni. |
