Breeding |
Behaviour | Courtship and breeding occurred overnight, so it was not observed. I awoke to find over 250 eggs attached to the glass, some individually and others in large clumps. The eggs were attached to the glass about 1/4 to 1/2 the distance down the side of the glass from the water surface.
The eggs were laid on glass that was in the path of significant water current. No eggs were laid on glass in areas of the tank which had relatively still water. (MAYBE THIS IS IMPORTANT)
This spawning took place in a quarantine tank. The fish had been purchased only 1 week ago, and they spawned in their quarantine tank. |
Eggs | There were 252 clear and creamy eggs laid which were 1.5mm in diameter. |
Segregation | To collect the eggs, I drained the water level in the aquarium low enough to expose the eggs. Then the eggs were scraped off the glass using the straight edge of a thin plastic ruler. The eggs were transferred to an illuminated 2 gallon aquarium with a sandy bottom, a small sponge filter, a 10W heater and a lot of java moss. |
Fry sizes | 7 days: 0mm 14 days: 0mm 21 days: 0mm |
Juvenile sizes | 1 month: 0mm 3 months: 0mm 6 months: 0mm |
Fry and juvenile feeding | Sadly, the eggs did not hatch. They did not mold. I suspect they weren't fertilized. |
