Etymology	(Spanish)Perruno=Canine + (Greek)ichthys=fish. This specific epithet literally means canine(perruno=canine). The full name of this species is dogfish, dog presumably in reference to its unfussy and gregarious eating habits.

Identification	Often confused with Leiarius marmoratus which is much more commonly encountered by aquarists. The fishes are identical in terms of colouration although P. perruno has 8 (1 hard and 7 soft) dorsal fin rays, Leiarius has 10 or 11.
