Re: Black-Water Plecos?
"But I wonder, isn’t the sucker-mouth an adaptation to fast flowing water? Fast flowing water is usually clear and just about the opposite of black-water." The "sucker-mouth" may have come about as an adaptation to fast flowing water as it did in Astroblepidae. However, over mill...

Re: Farlowella ID?
To my mind it is a bit of an Occam's razor. 1) The seller was "pretty sure" they came from Colombia. 2) Most of the Farlowella trade in Colombia is centered in Villavicencio. The most common species in this area are F. vittata (two rows of belly scutes) and F. mariaelenae (3 rows of belly ...

Re: 6 week old cory fry and going on vacation
Not sure how long you will be gone, but I have left my fish room alone and without any food on several occasions for up to three weeks with zero losses. Many South American fishes will go without food for months in the dry season in the wild.
At 1/2 inch they should be fine in the main tank.

Re: Farlowella ID?
Pretty sure this is F. vittata, but if you bought a group check them all as shipments sometimes contain mixed spp.
As Farlowella, like most Otocinclus, all sale for the same price under the same trade name Colombian exporters do not separate them by species.

Re: Corydoras venezuela
That is the thing with holotype locations. They represent a single point of discovery only. In the case of C. concolor the ho!otype location is actually the very southern edge of their range in the wild. For a llanos tank it all depends if you want to recreate the wet season or dry season. Wet seaso...

Re: Corydoras venezuela
C. schultzei is from a completely different river system in Peru. C. venezuelanus is restricted to the Tuy and Valencia basins. C. sp. llanos is found south of the Andes in the northern llanos of Venezuela. As one travels further south in the llanos it disappears and is replaced by C. concolor. I am...

Re: A not-yet-peer-reviewed paper on Hypancistrus zebra
Not to make light of the paper but the same outcome has been realized dozens of times in published aquaculture research. Crowding is the main factor that limits fry growth. This holds true in better controlled experiments than the above. Raising a bunch of Cory fry in different tanks at different st...

Re: Any good tips for corydoras fry to grow quickly
Lots of good research on fish growth has been done by scientists studying aquaculture. The major factors (tested independently) are: Crowding, water quality, and food (amount and quality). Water quality and food being equal the least crowded group grows fastest. Crowding and food being equal the gro...

No, not either. Both have very distinctive patterns on their caudal fin which are absent in your fish. Also, I have spawned lots of A. triradiatus and the fry never show the distinctive markings yours show. I am realizing we need to add fry photos to the Catelog where possible as in some Ancistrus t...

My best guess is two males and two females. Put them in a proper set up and you will quickly see the males develop obvious sexually dimorphic characteristics.
