Re: L200 Green Phantom, need tankmate suggestions
I'd say that S. euptera may not take that much notice on vegetables, but the Hemiancistrus subviridis needs a mix of meaty and vegetable food, and the meaty parts. Algae wafers are quite meaty, and I'm pretty sure that the S. euptera WILL show an interest in these My sole specimen of euptera behave...

Seriously uncool- overpriced, downright odd-looking and garish, not to mention far too shy and requiring specialised conditions for proper care.

Re: any dif types of food that can be fed to fish?
I only tried mushroom the once (it's REALLY buoyant!) with bristlenoses- my female grabbed it immediately, then shot off with such disgust because it wasn't what she was expecting. I left it in for 2 days as it didn't seem to be deteriorating, but never saw the adults on it after they'd tried it and...

Re: The PlanetCatfish coolwall thread
Top Gear is one of VERY FEW programmes I watch, and I do enjoy it, but I see no reason why we can't take the basic concept of the cool wall without mirroring it exactly. I must admit that whilst the placing of the car is pretty unimportant, I almost always disagree with Jeremy's positioning. I'm sti...

Re: Japanese shop stocklist
Wharf have had H Longifilis in, in the past - impressive but too big by far. They've also had a "pet" Heterobranchus bidorsalis somewhere on the premises a couple of years ago, in a 100X36X24" tank (actually way too small for the fish- I think they were upgrading his tank a couple of...

Re: Sweetcorn
I've tried fishing with sweetcorn, but don't favour it because one season I caught nearly as many wildfowl as fish on it- I'm not fond of trying to unhook a stressed, flapping moorhen or mallard whilst trying not to let any damage befall them!

To Mats: thank you! Are you still forming an opinion on pics 2, 7, and 11? Image 2: I'd say there is branching in the two top barbels there - but no dorsal extension, so it may be a hybrid. there's definitely not a notable dorsal extension on this fish, but there does appear to be some extension on...

this makes sense if they're allopatric (have non-overlapping distributions)- the Cat-eLog has specific localities for disjunctivus , but pardalis is just "widespread in the Amazon river system", so I'm not sure if they ever occur together naturally. We did have a Pterygo in this forum abou...

8 gallons? If I was being facetious I'd suggest a nice shoal of Daphnia  Timberwolf's suggestion of a betta isn't a bad suggestion, except that they're pretty dull fish- but with anything active the problem is keeping the water quality within "good" parameters as the volume is so low....

Re: unsure about identity
I'm not disagreeing with Richard on the ID of the larger "euptera", but I'm amazed that they're deliberately making hybrid euptera look-alikes as well- UNLESS hybrid offspring really do have better survival rates then true-bred hormone-stimulated crosses- something that's been intimated bu...

I've got to go for Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps as well- a fantastic-looking, absolutely majestic, not shy, placid and benign fish- it's just a shame they get to about twice the size I'd like. Give me any Pterygo over the over-priced, garish, pathologically shy L-numbers any day. Mine's just as happy ...

Thanks for the clarification Mats- by introgression I assume Jon means hybridisation? If Jon Armbruster can't identify them well, you can bet that the people who are using his key to identify invasive fish aren't going to be doing much better. That's almost a certainty, but as that key is pretty muc...

I think all the large, predatory pims are seriously cool fish- they embody to me exactly what drew me to catfish as a group in the first place, with stunning looks and the predatory "wow" factor. But no, I've never kept one and I expect I never will- it would require a lottery win and I do...

Re: rescued plec, please ID
Right, here's the reply from Jon Armbruster: That is probably P. disjunctivus, but it ranks as one of those I can't really tell very well - P. pardalis and P. disjunctivus are a nightmare. From this, I assume Jon Armbruster is therefore saying that a vermiculated belly is NOT necessarily diagnostic...

It might just be our antique software then (Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer 6.0, Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0). The message hasn't appeared before and isn't appearing on other sites, even thought they've also got ad-boxes on.

Re: rescued plec, please ID
Having checked the Cat-eLog entry for disjunctivus , the sole specimen shown doesn't seem to match Armbruster's key either- whilst it doesn't have chevrons it also doesn't have separate lateral spots, but vermiculations over its entire body surface. Whilst the individual in the Cat-eLog obviously a ...

Re: rescued plec, please ID
I'm not able to do anything more than use the key Mats linked to, but that clearly identifies this fish as disjunctivus , based on the abdominal vermiculations, and lateral spots being separate. Edit to clarify: I think the confusion in the key is the split for multiradiatus lacking BOTH chevrons an...

My corys are sort of like this- the smallest, unintentional shift in tank decor has them being hyper for several days, as though they're lost and desperately trying to find their way home, which has made me speculate as to how they "learn" a home environment. After a few days they settle d...

Re: C. Pestai cat-elog entry
the previous pestai entry has been moved across to CW044 based on Ian Fuller's comments. I was going to suggest that this entry is perhaps not relevant- Ian Fuller mentioned that the original type material had been lost/destroyed, therefore it's going to be nigh on impossible to categorically identi...

in all honesty, if the breeder would not produce hybrids, but use conspecific sperm, the female would die too So it is not a black mark for hybrids, but for non-wildcaught Synodontis, I think There's definitely an element of truth in this, and I definitely feel that the practice would still be unet...

Re: Info on distinguishing between very similar species
The problem is, if we know only 1 brown species in a grey genus, this may help, but the next brown fish from this genus could just as well be an undescribed species - such features would therefore need a lot of updating Yes, I'd thought about that (this is especially relevant where we have undescri...

Good question, and if you are (reasonably) sure that the fish is incorrect in the Cat-eLog, please post in the bugs section. Re: a 10 pnts question-pics version
If I've read it correctly, from the link to Armbruster's key posted by Mats, multiradiatus is therefore keyed out from pardalis/disjunctivus by the fact that the dark spots are discrete, "never coalescing or forming dark chevrons on posterior half of body", in multiradiatus . I'd wondered ...

if you breed fish with needles and hormones, you CAN also breed them true. the fact that those people don't bother tells me much and 1 thing above all: they have no ethics. no morals. they could do it right, but they won't. out of boredom or greed. but it's there. and that hasn''t got anything to d...
